Time-based media artist Hadeer Omar has created a contemporary response to the Al Koot Fort, which holds a unique and complex history since its construction in 1906. The artist draws upon the area surrounding the fort and uses Souq Waqif and the Msheireb district as sources of inspiration, weaving together traditional and contemporary aspects of daily life, translating and transforming them into surreal immersive environments.

Join artist and Photo Art Qatar collective member Adriane de Souza in conversation with Israa Al Balushi - a winner of the inaugural Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Single Image Award - to talk about photography and the meaning power of singular images. This conversation is part of a series organised by the 2021 award jury and curators - Photo Art Qatar - with each of the 2021 Single Image awardees.
ABOUT ISRAA AL BALUSHI:
Israa Mahmood Al Balushi is an Omani visual artist. Israa studied urban planning and architectural design and currently works as a creative designer. Israa’s multi-media work often explores the relationship between urbanism, art and culture.
ABOUT ADRIANE DE SOUZA:
Adriane de Souza is a Brazilian photographer currently based in Doha, Qatar. Her work has been exhibited in several locations such as Brazil, Qatar, Russia, UAE and United Kingdom. Adriane has two ongoing projects - I am not my father, where she explores concepts of masculinity, and Qawiya (قوية) [strong], where she explores the presence and importance of women in various sports in Qatar.
ABOUT THE SHEIKH SAOUD AL THANI SINGLE IMAGE AWARD:
The Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Award was first announced in 2001 as a platform to support photographers. The award has now been relaunched by Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar in its inaugural year, with the Saoud bin Mohammed Al-Thani Foundation, as annual open calls to photographers in Western Asia and North Africa (WANA), continuing its journey of celebrating and nurturing photographic talent. The next Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Single Image award open call will commence in September 2021.
